Transplantation instead of removal
When a manufacturing campus expands, the trees standing in the new footprint are usually treated as an obstruction. On this campus they were treated as an asset with a book value in shade, in microclimate and in the fifteen years already invested in growing them.
Transplantation is not always cheaper than replacement on the day. It is almost always cheaper across a decade, because a transplanted semi-mature tree delivers canopy immediately and a replacement sapling delivers it in year twelve.
