Why an airport is the hardest landscape client there is
An airport does not close. Every hour of work is scheduled around aircraft movements, security escorts and airside access permits, and every plant selection is tested against a question that no other site asks: will this attract birds into the approach path?
That single constraint reshapes the palette. Fruiting and seeding species are excluded from airside zones. Mature height is controlled so nothing intrudes into obstacle limitation surfaces. Grass regimes are set to a height that discourages roosting and foraging rather than to a height that looks tidy. Landscape at an airport is a safety system that happens to be green.
The approach corridor
The drive from the toll plaza to Terminal 1 is the first and last impression of the city for every passenger. We planted and have maintained the central median, the side verges and the pedestrian walkway along that corridor — a linear site measured in kilometres, irrigated in zones, and maintained under live traffic.
Linear sites fail differently from parks. They fail at the joints: at the point where one irrigation zone hands over to the next, at the kerb line where root volume runs out, at the gaps where a services trench was cut through and backfilled with the wrong material. Most of the engineering on a corridor like this is invisible and sits below the mulch line.
The afforestation trial that changed how we work
The airport allowed us to test the Miyawaki method on a defined block: deep soil preparation, a dense multi-layer mix of native species, heavy mulch, intensive watering and weeding for the establishment period, then removal of intervention.
It worked. Canopy closure came fast, weeding demand collapsed once the canopy shaded the ground, and the block became self-sustaining far sooner than a conventional avenue planting would have. That result is the reason afforestation is now a core capability rather than a line item.
